Actual vs dimensional vs billable weight

These values answer different questions. Keeping them separate makes a carrier correction easier to diagnose.

Three definitions

Actual weight is measured on a scale. Dimensional weight converts volume using a rule. Billable weight is generally the greater applicable value after thresholds, minimums and rounding.

Why the invoice can still differ

Zones, service, residential status, handling, packaging type, account factors and remeasurement can all affect the final charge.

Worked example: an 18 × 12 × 8 inch carton

The carton volume is 1,728 cubic inches. With a 139 divisor, 1,728 ÷ 139 equals about 12.43 pounds, which becomes 13 pounds when the rule rounds the dimensional result up. If the packed carton weighs 8 pounds on a scale, the planning comparison uses 13 pounds.

That is not a postage quote. Service, zone, account terms, packaging and surcharges can still change the final carrier charge.

A reliable comparison sequence

Measure the closed package, record scale weight, select the rule that matches the service and market, calculate dimensional weight, then compare the applicable rounded values. Keeping each step visible makes a later correction easier to diagnose.
